[번역책] ‘슬픈 인디안’ – 아더 H/번역 이선혜

The book (한국어 번역판) is about the source of pain in Indigenous people in the Americas. The colonial education policy of the Indian Residential School during the colonial periods brought about a rupture in the Indigenous community and family which resulted in broken relationships and made people turn to the temporary comfort of alcohol and substance abuse. The overall historical outcome was a breakdown of their traditional life.

The author, Arthur H., was converted to Christianity and found a ministry to help himself and others through the Alcoholic Anonymous program.

I strongly recommend the book to a missionary who embarks on the ministry of native people because any usual conventional western way of outsider-centric, agenda-driven, without the basic understanding of the day-to-day issues facing Indigenous communities, might cause more harm than benefit to them.

이 책은 아메리카 원주민들의 고통의 근원에 관한 책입니다. 식민지 시대 동안 인디언 거주 학교의 식민지 교육 정책은 원주민 사회와 가정에 파열을 초래했고, 이로 인해 관계가 깨지고 사람들이 술과 약물 남용의 일시적인 편안함으로 눈을 돌리게 했습니다. 전체적인 역사적 결과는 그들의 전통적인 삶의 붕괴였습니다.

저자인 아서 H.는 기독교로 개종했고 알코올 중독자 프로그램을 통해 자신과 다른 사람들을 돕는 사역을 찾았습니다.

저는 이 책을 원주민 사역을 시작하는 선교사에게 강력히 추천합니다. 왜냐하면 원주민 사회가 직면하고 있는 일상적인 문제들에 대한 기본적인 이해 없이 외부인 중심적이고 의제 중심적인 서구식 관습적인 선교 방식은 그들에게 득보다는 해를 끼칠 수 있기 때문입니다.
